Psychosis is a group of symptoms that includes perceiving sensory stimulus that is not present in reality (hallucinations), or believing certain facts that are also not present in reality (delusions). Psychosis is a serious group of symptoms that can lead to increased levels of risk to oneself or others, or long term functional impairment in terms of social, occupational and educational domains.
Psychosis can be caused by substances, or can arise without any known cause, such as in a condition called schizophrenia.
The treatment for psychosis depends on the cause, but usually includes medication and counselling. Sometimes, hospitalisation is required to stabilise someone's condition or contain risk. Involving families and other agencies in supporting a patient with psychosis is also crucial.
Our psychiatrists are experts in treating psychotic conditions and presentations.
